As someone with big dreams, Shivon (age 14) knows that sometimes you have to step outside of your comfort zone to get to where you’re going.

“I learned to be outgoing,” explains the aspiring Supreme Court justice. “I used to be kind of shy, but in law you have to be able to go out of your way and talk to people, put yourself out there and talk in front of large crowds. I had to MC one of the final [Samba Kidz’] performances and had to talk in front of a large crowd as well.”

Shivon has also been inspired to try new things, having begun guitar lessons after being exposed to the surdo and bell at Samba Kidz.

Shivon’s commentary:

When someone sees my photo, I don’t want them to understand what they are seeing right away. I want them to think about it and imagine what it might be. I want to stimulate their curiosity.

Water Droplets on the Bench by Ashley Water Droplets on the Bench

Ashley (15 years) joined the Samba Kidz program almost 2 years ago and loves to play the surdo (big drum).

An aspiring writer and journalist, Ashley already shows her skill at getting to the heart of the matter when talking about how Drum Artz’ Samba Kidz Program inspires her.

“Although everyone might not be interested in the same things and the same kind of music, we can all relate to each other through Samba music.”

Ashley’s photograph “Water Droplets on the Bench” is a commentary on natural resources.

Featured Artist: Tyrell

Fences and Wires by Tyrell Fences and Wires Egg by Tyrell Egg

Tyrell (aka TCinator) is a musical force to be reckoned with, having performed along-side Brazilian musical sensation Carlinos Brown by age 10!

With 3 years of Samba Kidz under his belt, TCinator is a multi-instrumentalist who connects with the music and the other kids. He says, “the music talks to me.”

Tyrell has also learned a valuable lesson in tenacity: “I learned that you should never give up and I learned a lot about teamwork and cooperation.”

TCinator will have these two photographs, "Fences and Wires" and "Egg", on display and he comments, “When people see my art, I want them to feel inspired.”

Featured Artist: Dawit

Dawit, age 10, is a proud Samba Kid and has proven himself to be a musical adventurer for the last 4 years.

"I like playing steel pan a lot, I also like playing the bell and surdo," says Dawit.

The most inspiring thing about being in Drum Artz for Dawit boils down to the joyful noise that the kids make with their instruments: "I like how it sounds and all the different types of music we make."

What does Dawit have to say about his artistic process?

"I took this picture by accident and realized that it looked really cool... Then I tried to do it with other stuff. I tried using movement to get an effect with different objects and different colours."

Featured Artist: Christine

Meet 13-year-old Christine, a 6-year Samba Kidz veteran and drumming virtuoso.

She worked with the idea of creating a unique scene to come up with her featured photos “Fruit bowl” and “Crayons”.

She hopes that her photographs will bring a smile to everyone’s face and make for the kind of conversation pieces that light up a room.

What does being a Samba Kid mean to Christine?

“Sharing knowledge, meeting new friends, teaching them music and seeing how all of the kids try their best and try new things” are the experiences that Christine says she values the most.
